HTE Starlink DIY Self-Survey

Quick-Start Instructions — Hamptons Edition, July 2025

Skip the truck roll and get a firm quote in one business day. Follow the steps below, then email us your results—no special form required.

1. What You’ll Need

  • Smartphone with the free Starlink app (iOS / Android)

  • Tape measure or laser range-finder (optional)

  • Ladder tall enough to reach the eaves (only if you’re comfortable)

Safety note: Not a fan of ladders? Ask for our credited $670 Pro Survey and we’ll do the climbing for you.

2. Find Two or Three Candidate Spots

Often a Win

  • Ridge line or upper chimney cap

  • Gable end that clears nearby treetops

  • 15- to 25-ft galvanized pole near the pool-equipment pad

Often a Fail

  • Deck railing under an oak canopy

  • Mid-slope of a cedar roof shaded by trees

  • Back-of-garage wall facing dense pines

3. Run the Starlink Obstruction Test

  1. Open the Starlink app → Check for Obstructions.

  2. Hold your phone flat and slowly sweep the sky until the progress ring hits 100 %.

  3. A map appears—green/gray = clear, pink = blocked.

  4. Take a screenshot and note the “Expected Obstruction” time.

Pass / Borderline / Fail

  • 0–5 s obstruction → Pass – you’re good.

  • 6–50 s obstruction → Borderline – usually fine; a taller mount may help.

  • 51 s+ or solid pink wedge → Fail – pick a higher/clearer location.

Tree-belt tip: Run the test twice—mid-day and late afternoon. Summer foliage can add 15–20 % blockage.

4. Take Four Photos (JPEG or PNG, ≤ 10 MB each)

  1. Obstruction screenshot from the best spot (proves sky clearance)

  2. Wide exterior shot of that spot (shows ladder access & mounting surface)

  3. Cable-path photo from dish location toward your router area (helps us pre-cut cable)

  4. Interior rack or shelf where the router will live (we pre-label power and PoE)

(Optional) Add a fifth photo of a tape measure showing the straight-line distance (feet) from dish location to router wall.

Quick FAQ

What if every spot fails?
We can add a 10- to 25-ft pole or tree-strap mount to clear the canopy.

Does the dish melt snow?
Yes—Starlink dishes have an auto-heater; heavy ice may still need a quick broom sweep.

Can I keep Optimum and use Starlink for backup?
Absolutely. Our enterprise grade router auto-routes traffic and ensure maximum uptime.

Is data capped?
Starlink Residential includes 1 TB of Priority Data; Business plans offer 2 TB. After that, speeds slow but remain usable.
