Soho Residence / Art Gallery
Case Study: Manhattan Residence/Art Gallery – Advanced Lutron Lighting and Home Technology Integration
Project Background
Our firm was tasked with designing and implementing a custom Lutron lighting system in a Manhattan space that serves both as a private residence and an art gallery. This unique environment required a highly adaptable and flexible lighting solution to accommodate a dynamic and expensive art collection, alongside the integration of sophisticated residential technologies.
Project Objectives
The main goals of the project were:
Adaptive Lighting: To create a lighting environment that could adjust to frequent changes in art installations, varying in style and size.
Integrated Home Technology: To equip the residence with high-end automation features including motorized shades, multi-room audio systems, and covert security elements, ensuring both comfort and functionality.
Challenges and Solutions
Technical Challenges:
Legacy Component Utilization: The Lutron system needed to include legacy Ecosystem drivers that were compatible with third-party light fixtures. Despite the discontinuation of these products, we preemptively registered and sourced the necessary components from Lutron, ensuring a seamless integration with the project's sophisticated design elements.
Dynamic Lighting Needs: Given the art gallery’s functional requirements, the lighting system had to be capable of adjusting illumination based on the artwork displayed. We implemented a system using adjustable downlights that could be reprogrammed in terms of intensity and zoning to accommodate different pieces, ensuring each artwork was displayed in its best light.
Operational Challenge:
Wiring Misinterpretation by Third-party Electrician: During the project's final stages, a junior technician from the electrical company misinterpreted the wiring schematics and incorrectly wired the smart fixtures. Instead of placing blame, our team took a collaborative approach, spending three days on-site to rectify the wiring and ensure all lighting fixtures were properly powered and controlled.
Implementation
Lighting and Technology Design: The project included extensive millwork imported from Italy, requiring a sophisticated approach to both lighting and technological integration. The residence was outfitted with Lutron motorized shades, Sonos multi-room audio, and covert surveillance cameras. The technology was carefully integrated to remain inconspicuous, using a combination of Sonance invisible speakers and small aperture speakers, along with custom theater speakers from Artcoustics in the media room, controlled separately via a Control4 system at the client's request.
Results
The project successfully met all the specified requirements, providing a flexible lighting system and comprehensive home technology integration that enhanced both the functionality and aesthetics of the space. The lighting system's ability to adapt to changing art installations proved invaluable, allowing for optimal display conditions under any circumstances.
Conclusion
This case study illustrates our firm’s ability to tackle complex technical challenges through proactive planning and effective collaboration. By integrating advanced lighting and home technology solutions, we delivered a system that not only meets the functional needs of an art gallery but also provides the comfort and ease of a luxury residence. The project stands as a testament to our commitment to delivering high-quality, adaptable, and user-focused solutions.
